Can you and should you use a Li-Ion battery?

A Li-Ion battery is completely different from a NiMH battery. A Li-Ion battery is lighter weight, and performs at a higher operation voltage (14.4 volts versus 9.6 volts with a NiMH battery). Therefore, when you use a Li-Ion battery, the run time will be a great deal longer. Some laptops are preconfigured to allow you to upgrade from NiMH to a Li-Ion battery; check your Dell laptop manual to make sure before you try to make the upgrade.

Getting the most from your Dell laptop battery

1) If you do decide to purchase a NiMH battery for your Dell laptop, you must remember to condition it. Every two weeks, let the battery run down completely, then charge it up fully. A Li-Ion battery does not require conditioning.
